Series Introduction: Stillness

Life. Will. Not. Slow. Down. Ever since before the start of summer, it feels like I’ve been a passenger on the NYC subway. Quickly getting on, only to hop off even faster so I don’t miss the next train. And, holy moly is this exhausting! I am truly wiped out.

Between extended vacations to far away states, weekend trips up north, and bachelorette parties, I find myself craving a Sunday at home doing absolutely nothing in my pajamas—longing for stillness.

As I sit down to write this, during one of the busiest work weeks I’ve experienced since first starting my job last fall, stillness is most definitely on mind. Yes, I love the hustle. I love working so hard with a team who refuses to settle for anything less than great. I appreciate the busy seasons, but it’s beginning to feel like I’ve forgotten the value of being still, finding peace.

So, how can I make small changes in my daily schedule to leave time for stillness? HAH, good question…between my full-time job, my photography business, and Crowned Chics (which, let’s consider this a full-time job, too), I’ve been struggling to make sacrifices for the good of my mental health. You may have noticed a few missing blog posts over the last couple of months, or that we’ve been nearly MIA on Instagram recently, but can I be honest? I AM LOSING MY MIND OVER HERE. I’ll be the first to admit I cannot do it all. Goodness, that’s hard to say though! Can anyone else relate?

Stillness has been in short supply here in Nikki’s world as of late, and I’m ready for room to breathe, to be human. If you’re anything like me, I know you thrive in the fire and you make a to-do list look damn easy. But, we can’t keep going on like this. If there’s something I’m learning right now it’s this: working on the things you’re passionate about requires you to give and give and give—stillness is what replenishes you, without it you will eventually find yourself empty and your dreams frail.

Is that a place we want to find ourselves in, ladies? Uh, no. This is why we’re talking about stillness for the month of September. We cannot let our dreams dry up in the midst of an ignorant hustle to just get things done for the sake of it. I deserve better than that—you do too.

I know it’s hard to sit and be still…to rest and find peace. You may feel unproductive and guilty in the stillness, but I’ll promise you one thing—you’re only doing yourself (and your dream) a favor.

Nikki is the owner and founder of Crowned Chics. She lives in the warm desert of Phoenix, Arizona with her beloved family. If she's not ferociously clanking away on her typewriter, she's behind the camera capturing moments for her business Charnstrom Captures Photography.
