Threads of Identity

Identity is at the very core of who you are. It’s what makes you… well, you. How you identify yourself shapes your personality, your “look”, and ultimately your heart. From a young age you have had the choice to become and grow into the person you hope to be. Of course, over the years your idealistic self changes and evolves. That’s natural, healthy even. Although, there is one thread of your identity that can never be pulled, ripped or frayed. This seam is strong and without give. The best part is, it exists within you and me.
“For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.” Colossians 1:16-17
If you find yourself trudging through an identity crisis, remember that YOU are sewn together, thread by thread by an excellent Creator. Your identity is found in His delicate attention to detail and the intentional, tailor-made pattern that only fits you. While your self-made seams may be coming undone, it’s His that hold you together.
When I was a child, I went through several identity phases. There was the time I thought I was going to be a veterinarian and then I realized I don’t do well with sick animals. Then fourth grade came along and I knew without a doubt I wanted to become a world-traveling archeologist, but then somewhere along the way I left that innocent dream behind.
It’s alright to go through phases, and while they typically lessen in frequency with age, sometimes you and I just need a new perspective on our priorities.
Where can we go to find answers to who we are?
“For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him.” Colossians 1:19
DWELL IN HIM.
If you’re wondering just who you are, run back to the One who created you. God never puts His hand to something without first finding a purpose for it. Paul says it so beautifully in the first chapter of Colossians, in that the ultimate goal is to be made complete in Christ. All of those inadequacies you feel, can be made right in the One who died on the cross for you. You don’t have to grab a needle and thread to sew yourself back together… You’ll just end up poking yourself. The only one who can see the pattern in which you are made is the designer Himself.
While He is the one who is making you whole again, you have to be the one to clothe yourself in His fashions of grace, mercy and redemption. In order for His gentle hand to remain steady, you must be willing to follow His leadings.
“Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.” Colossians 2:6-7
AND NOW! Two words packed with so much hope for the future. He is presently building you up and all He requires of you is to walk with Him. I don’t know about you, but I think I make that a lot harder than it needs to be sometimes.
So what’s next? To simply let go. Let go of that person you thought you would be. Forget your shortcomings and “not enoughs.” Toss aside the image of a perfect you because babe, there will never be a perfect you. However, there is a perfect man we call Savior, Healer, Redeemer. Let that be enough for you.
