4 Success Tips for Dream Chasing
BY: NIKKI MICHELLE CHARNSTROM
Where does ambition come from? We’re not born with it, nor is it a trait passed down from generation to generation. If we’re lucky enough to have parents who value success, most of us are taught to work hard and do well at a very young age. While we might be encouraged to pursue excellence as kids, we don’t quite grasp its purpose. Sure, if we got a good grade on a spelling test we might get a shiny gold star, or if we tidied up our rooms we could get a high-five from mom — but at the end of the day, could we truly say we’re self-motivated? At that age, probably not. We still have no clue what motivation looks and feels like.
I would say I have always been a highly determined gal — except for those lost teen years where all I cared about were boys and how my hair looked. Sure, motivation could very well be an innate trait the good Lord blessed me with, but as far as ambition is concerned, I developed that.
After a rough breakup at the beginning of my sophomore year of college, I slowly began the search for myself and my identity — as I had lost it all in him and the joke that was our relationship. It felt as if a forgotten switch was finally turned on, never to be turned off again — not for anyone or anything. Let me tell you, girl... I never felt more alive or more me than the moment I realized I was better on my own.
My experience is a testament to the truth that you have to dangerously want ambition if you desire to do big things with your life. Back then, I took it one success at a time until I realized I had the power to create my own victory, to be my own success story. That’s when everything changed.
If you’ve been searching for an opportunity to nurture your ambition and pave your own path to success, I’ll share some advice with you I’ve come to learn along the way.
Don’t Stay Down.
I can’t tell you how many roadblocks, rejections and painful conversations I’ve encountered that have tried to slip me up or knock me down. I’ll be honest, at times, I stayed there. I let the hurt keep me in a place of discouragement and failure. I’m not perfect at dealing with it, and guess what? You don’t have to be either. You can feel defeated and at a loss but girlfriend, just don’t stay there. I mean it. If you want your ambition to carry your dreams to the next level, you have to decide, despite the opinions of others, YOU WON’T QUIT.
Even If It Sounds Crazy, Don’t Let It Scare You.
I remember the exact moment the idea of launching my own blog sparked like a lightbulb hovering overhead. Immediately after, the very first thought I had was, “No way, that’s crazy. I could never do that.” And, I let that thought delay the inevitable — because funny enough, here we are! That “crazy” idea has wound up becoming my heart and soul, completely. So, how did I overcome the fear? By talking with my incredibly supportive family and friends. Even though at first mention of it, I prefaced the conversation with, “So, I have this CRAZY idea...” they didn’t shrink back or doubt my ability to make it happen. Moral of the story is, let your loved ones speak life into whatever it is you want to accomplish. I promise, if they’re supportive, you’ll look past that initial fear.
If the dream that lies a ahead of you seems daunting, just take it one step at a time. The fact that it feels big means it’s a dream worth chasing, girl! To use my story as an example, I knew I wanted to launch this blog and I knew it needed to be for women. What was the first thing on the agenda? A name! After that? A logo! All very doable things to check off that list in a short amount of time. So, start by making a list of things you can begin doing now. Think small too. It doesn’t have to be that online store or finding that office space. It can be registering your business as an LLC or designing a business card. The smaller you make each goal, the more likely you’ll feel confident in reaching them. The greater the confidence, the greater amount of goals you’ll meet!
Stay True To You.
When building a brand, business or following a dream, it’s easy to compare your path to that badass babe on Instagram. DON’T DO IT. You have your own set of skills and unique talents no one else in the world can offer. Sure, there might be someone out there who is already killing it at that thing you’re just beginning — but they aren’t doing it like YOU. The dreams inside of you exist for a purpose. You owe it to yourself, and your dream, to breathe life into whatever it is you’re hoping to accomplish. You’re not doing the world any favors by keeping it locked away, never to be heard or seen. What you have to create is pure magic — and something this world has never seen before. So, get out there and become that babe you’ve been admiring on social media. I believe your version of her is going to be so much better anyway.
