Hearts are the very source of life. It keeps blood, character and passion pumping through our veins. Our hearts beat with love for that which brings us joy — and, for the moments that inspire us beyond measure. Although it’s an organ with so much strength and capacity for happiness, it is no stranger to the slightest bit of pain.

The human heart is incredible but yet, it can be frail and unsteady at times. I’d like to believe every emotion we feel stems from the heart. Think about it — in times of utter excitement, it feels as if your heart could explode. Or, in a moment of hurt, the heart feels heavy and burdened. Now, I might want to believe this because I’m the follow-your-heart kind of girl. Yes, the mind is in control of how we think, act and make decisions but a part of me has to believe we wouldn’t feel as deeply as we do if the heart had no matter in it.

As much as we would rather avoid things that bring us pain, they are beautiful in their own way. Imagine if the heart was happy, go-lucky every hour of every day. It would probably never come to know what true joy actually felt like. I don’t know about you but I live for the moments that bring me unsurpassable amounts of laughter. My soul only knows just how truly precious those experiences are because my heart’s been broken, damaged and mistreated.

Looking back at the seasons of my life saturated in heartbreak, I realize now the impact they’ve made on my present. The failed relationships, lost loved ones, and collection of disappointments were troublesome then, but now they are the very reason my heart beats with resilience. It’s easy for me to analyze past hurts and find the good in them — but how can I practice that in the midst of them? Girl, would I like to know.

Throughout the month of October, Crowned Chics will be sharing our heartbreaks and resolutions — or, the band-aids we’ve used to temporarily mend them. Nursing a broken heart is never easy and most certainly not an immediate fix. You’ll read stories we’ve written from life’s most fractured moments in the hopes of touching those broken pieces within you. Retracing heartbreak might not be easy but we’re ready to offer you hope and healing.

At the end of the day, brokenness is all around us. We have a decision to make when it comes to how we ought to respond to it. For me, I want to allow myself the opportunity to shatter and feel every horrible ounce of it. Why? Because I know when I’m put back together again, I’ll be a testimony of God’s faithfulness.
